As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace (1 Peter 4:10)
Lutheran Mercy Care Ministries are both a chaplaincy and after care ministry designed to embrace and teach offenders and people dealing with drug and alcohol addictions about Christ’s love for them. The Ministry is relational and offers bible studies, prayers, lively discussions on faith issues and ways to change their ways.
Vicar John Widmer
John has been involved in the jail ministry since 2002 and the after care ministry since 2014. As the Vicar at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pagosa Springs, he is responsible for Jail and Prison Ministry and is expected to be ordained as a pastor in 2018. He serves the Archuleta and La Plata County Detention Centers and at the Guadalupe County Correctional Facility in Santa Rosa NM. He also ministers at the New Mexico Prison as a member of the New Mexico Chapter of Kairos Prison Ministry International. John brings a unique perspective to the ministry as he has seen both sides of the fence and shares his testimony at workshops, conferences, and with inmates.
“If it wasn’t for the never-ending generosity, patience and love from John and his ministry, we would have never found ourselves. He was the light that shone through our darkest hour.”
The warmth of Christ’s love is lived out in community, an expression of and, indeed, Christ’s very own activity of witness and mercy through His Church, which is “faith working through love (Gal. 5:6)”
